Love in Action
‘사회봉사단’
Imagine the world that will change because of you!
Hanyang University, embodying its philosophy of 'Love in Deed and Truth,' became the first university in Korea to establish a Social Service Corps in 1994.
Through organic collaborations in education, service, and entrepreneurship with students (Hope Hanyang), faculty and staff (Happy Hanyang), alumni (Together Hanyang), and the local community, the university has become synonymous with social contribution.
With pride in being the 'first' and a commitment to fulfilling its social responsibility as a leading university in social innovation, Hanyang operates the participatory practice-based course 'Hanyang Social Service' and offers the 'Social Innovation Interdisciplinary Major' to enhance expertise.
Furthermore, it aims to serve as an on- and off-campus hub for social innovation by fostering partnerships with local communities and organizations.
Additionally, the Social Service Team fulfills its mission of nurturing practitioners of 'Love in Deed and Truth'
by supporting students' voluntary social contribution activities aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby contributing to the creation of a better world.

The Social Service course is offered in a four-semester system, covering spring, summer, fall, and winter terms.
Through this course, students engage in social service activities in various communities and have expanded their service efforts to international locations.
The Social Service course can be taken up to four times for a total of 4 credits before graduation, and it is a mandatory requirement to complete it before graduating.
1. Basic Direction of Social Service Policy
Hanyang University established the Social Volunteer Corps and systematically operates social service activities to align with its founding principles, educational philosophy, and educational objectives.
[Founding Philosophy]: Cultivating great "practitioners of love" who contribute to humanity.
[Educational Philosophy]: Nurturing individuals with the virtues of diligence, honesty, humility, and service.
[Educational Purpose]: Nurturing individuals who realize their potential and contribute to the prosperity of local communities, the nation, and humanity
by teaching and researching profound theories and comprehensive, meticulous application methods.
(1) Securing a foundation for realizing the founding philosophy through the mandatory practice of social service.
Based on the founding philosophy of "Love in Action" our university established the first Social Volunteer Corps in a Korean university in 1994. Additionally, the completion of the social service course (1 credit) has been made a graduation requirement to encourage active participation in social service.
Through the mandatory completion of the social service course, we aim to provide an opportunity for students to grow into global leaders embodying the founding philosophy. To expand global social service in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we operate social service programs linked to the 17 SDGs.
(2) Ensuring the initiative of students participating in social service activities.
In the process of completing social service courses and volunteer programs, students are given opportunities to propose their own projects. Additionally, to support the realization of these ideas, we provide various exchange and educational programs such as the Asia Pacific Youth Exchange, Social Venture Youth Exchange, and Social Innovation Boot Camp. We also connect various resources both on and off-campus to help develop and implement social innovation ideas.
(3) The beginning of solving social issues that change the world, the establishment and operation of the first-ever Social Innovation Interdisciplinary Program.
In April 2018, our university became the first in East Asia to join "Ashoka U," a global network of social innovation universities. This achievement solidified our position as an institution dedicated to fostering "changemakers" with the three core competencies of Public Mind (responsibility toward the community), Value Creation (creative value generation), and Global Networking (capacity for resource linkage to action). This was made possible by the newly established Social Innovation Interdisciplinary Program, which is connected to various extracurricular and academic programs, forming a comprehensive social innovation education system. New students in the Social Innovation Interdisciplinary Program are recruited each semester, and the university has established its own Social Innovation Curriculum Committee to ensure the quality of the program. Every semester, the curriculum is revised based on student feedback to enhance the effectiveness of the courses.
2. Policies Related to Social Service
Hanyang University has established a policy to create a university where all members engage in service. The foundation for the establishment of the Social Volunteer Corps is outlined in the Articles of Incorporation of Hanyang Foundation, and the university has enacted regulations for the Social Volunteer Corps, formalizing its establishment and the practice of the founding philosophy.
In accordance with the Implementation Rules of the Hanyang University Academic Regulations, all enrolled students are required to complete social service as a graduation requirement.
