"Positive Change in Society"
A change maker is a global leader who possesses three core competencies: Public Mind, which reflects a sense of responsibility toward the community; Value Creation, which demonstrates the ability to generate creative value;
and Global Networking, which involves the capability to connect resources for practical implementation, all of which contribute to changing the world.
The recognition of Hanyang University as a Change Maker campus is largely attributed to the various social innovation-related curricula offered,
as well as the establishment of the Social Innovation Convergence major at the undergraduate level, making it the first of its kind in a Korean university.
The establishment of the Social Innovation Convergence major has made it possible to create an integrated educational system for social innovation, linking various extracurricular programs with regular academic courses.
In October 2016, as preparations began for joining Ashoka U, a review of existing courses related to "social innovation" was conducted. It was surprising to all involved that there were as many as 150 courses related to social innovation,
including Introduction to Economics (Economics), Design and Technological Innovation (Department of Industrial Convergence), CSR Strategy (Business Administration), and Success Factors of Collaborative Business Models (Global CEO and Entrepreneurship Convergence Major).
Among the many courses, around 30 were selected that effectively foster both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in social innovation.
As a result, the Social Innovation Convergence major was launched in the first semester of 2018.
In particular, the Social Innovation Convergence major is distinct from regular courses, as all of its courses are designed around the values of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
incorporating these global objectives into the curriculum.
Through this, Hanyang University is leading the way in realizing the educational value of the 17 SDGs by offering them as part of the major curriculum, rather than as isolated courses,
providing students with an academic foundation that incorporates the values of the SDGs across multiple subjects.
The Social Innovation Convergence major is open to students who have completed one semester after admission. Upon completing 36 credits within the major, students will be awarded a Bachelor's degree in Social Innovation.
Courses that overlap with the student's primary major can be credited up to 15 credits. The curriculum is broadly divided into foundational theories of social innovation and practical exercises for solving social issues.
The foundational theories are composed of basic courses that foster empathy for the community, such as Understanding Social Innovation, Understanding International Development Cooperation, and Changemaker Skills.
The practical exercises for solving social issues include programs like the Social Innovation Capstone Design, where students engage with real-world social problems and explore potential solutions.
